ROSNEFT HAS DEVELOPED A NEW TYPE OF BITUMEN WITH IMPROVED CHARACTERISTICS

February 2024

Specialists from Rosneft's research institute in Novokuibyshevsk have developed and patented modified bitumen that can withstand increased transportation loads. The new product is used as part of roadbeds and has an increased operating temperature range from plus 40 ℃ to minus 50 ℃. The loads that the new bitumen can withstand are comparable to the pressure of a 40-ton truck stopped in front of an intersection.

The new product is based on our own unique technology of bitumen binder modification. Thanks to this, the production cost is reduced by 10–15%.

The developed bitumen modification technology can be implemented without significant capital investments at any production site. The Company's new line of modified bitumen will provide the Russian road industry with high-quality and durable materials.

Bitumen binder contained in asphalt road surface is subjected to various physical, chemical, mechanical and weather effects throughout its service life, which leads to changes in its characteristics. The new product has enhanced performance properties and also gives the road surface the necessary elasticity to prevent seasonal deformations.

The optimal bitumen composition should be resistant to shear deformations from vehicle wheels, and must also address the maximum positive temperatures for a certain region in the summer, and exhibit crack resistance at negative temperatures in the winter.
